The Most Instagrammable Spots on Lake Martin
When you live in a place as picturesque as Lake Martin, it’s hard to choose the most picture-worthy spots. There are secret coves, amazing restaurants, beautiful trails, and breathtaking views just about anywhere and everywhere you turn. However, we also know that in today’s social media driven world, there’s something exhilaratingly fun about snapping a photo bound to get a lot of likes. Because who doesn’t like a great photo? We thought long and hard to narrow down the best photo-ops around the lake, and we thought we’d share those spots with you. Grab your smartphone, log-in to Instagram, and plan to visit each place on our list. Consider it your Lake Martin Instagram bucket list, and a bit of a spring/summer challenge. Make sure to tag us (@lakemartinteam with #lakemartinteam) when you post! We want to see the fruits of your photography labor, and we’ll even choose a photo to feature each month.
Overlook Park is tops on our list because it’s accessible while providing an amazing selection of views. You can take it easy with a photo-worthy picnic at Overlook Park off of Highway 50, or you can step-up your photography game with an adventure on the Cherokee Ridge Alpine Trail. If you choose the latter, you’ll be treated to several stunning spots for viewing the shimmering lake below.
Smith Mountain Fire Tower
If you’re craving panoramic views perfect for your Instagram stories, make your way to the Smith Mountain Fire Tower. Originally built as a lookout for forest fires, the tower was left in despair until being restored and reopened to the public in 2012. Today, brave, active visitors can follow the trail to the tower then climb to its peak. There, 80 feet above the mountain, they’re privy to astonishing views. Talk about picture-perfect!
It’s no longer enough to see the sunset at dinner. In today’s photo-ready world, you have to see the sunset while holding your pretty, chilled drink and possibly partaking in a boomerang video, too. Foodstagrammers, turn your attention to Kowaliga for exactly what you need. Dubbed “dinner with a view,” Kowaliga offers plates filled with fresh, local ingredients, specialty cocktails, and of course a great deck, often complete with live music, right on the lake.
Better bring a quick-fingered friend for this Instagram-worthy spot. After all, how else will you get your prized rock-jumping photo? Chimney Rock, also known as Acapulco Rock, is best known for its varying heights for deep water plunges. Accessible only by water, it’s a quintessential Lake Martin spot. Daredevils will relish in the 60 foot jump while those a little more timid will be intrigued by the 20 footer. No matter what you choose, make sure your friend is at the ready with their camera.
If you’ve seen the Lake Martin lighthouse appear in photos and searches, you’ve seen Children’s Harbor. Best known for the little while building on the point, Children’s Harbor also boasts several other picturesque spots like the outdoor Church in the Pines. In fact, it should come as no surprise that Children’s Harbor is one of Lake Martin’s most popular venues for weddings. You never know when you might catch a bride in the background of your photo!
