Boos & Brews: October on and around Lake Martin
As Anne of Green Gables once said, “I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.” We couldn’t agree more. Fall in and around Lake Martin is a special time. Leaves are changing; the weather is cooling off, and football is in full swing. It’s another magical season! One of the best parts about living at Lake Martin is the proximity to neighboring towns, especially since the fall weather encourages anyone and everyone to get outdoors. This month, we’re cleverly theming our blog post boos and brews. Boos, to give you a heads-up on local Halloween fun and brews, to give you a few nearby breweries to checkout. Happy October!
Micro-breweries are becoming more and more prevalent in the beer world. In fact, Auburn even offers a graduate certificate in brewing science and operations with the purpose of preparing students for careers in brewing and distilling. Cool, right?! Two of the best breweries around can be found in Opelika. Red Clay is owned and operated by three native Alabamians, and the company brews seven beers and one cider. As with most breweries, the ideas are always churning, so you never know what you might encounter on your visit. There’s also nearby Resting Pulse Brewing. It’s located in the heart of downtown Opelika and has over 10 beers to share with enthusiasts. Both breweries also have food menus, so it’s a great place to spend the day.
Should you be looking for boos and not brews, there are several local events to pencil into your October calendar:
Wind Creek State Park Fall Festival (October 18 – 19):
Wind Creek State Park hosts a fall festival annually. The weekend kicks off with a pumpkin carving contest on Friday. Saturday brings a costume parade, a carnival, trick-or-treating, a campsite decorating contest and a haunted hayride. Find your tents and head to Wind Creek State Park!
Alexander City Trick-or-Treat (October 26):
Main Street will host trick-or-treating for all little ghouls and boys on Saturday, October 26. Participating merchants will have candy for kiddos, and we’re sure parents can grab a treat or two too. There will also be special discounts offered at some stores.
Halloween at the Amp (October 29):
Halloween at the Amp is one of our favorite October traditions. It’s an evening of music performed by the Alexander City Middle School Advanced Band Benjamin Russell Concert and Symphonic Bands. Attendees are invited to dress up in their Halloween garb to take in the tunes (and tombs).
